L'espressione artistica di Pettinà si manifesta allo stesso modo con la pittura (olio su tela) e con la plastica — legno, materiali vari, ma in particolare terracotta.
Nel 1991 tiene la sua prima personale di pittura e scultura, nella quale lo stile figurativo deformato e sofferto mette in risalto l'essenzialità del disegno e la ricerca di espressività. C'è spesso un'ombra intorno alle figure, un contorno scuro che, come una catena, priva l'uomo della libertà.
Dal 1992 al 1995 prende il sopravvento una maggiore esigenza di libertà espressiva, che si manifesta con la stilizzazione della forma, la spregiudicatezza del colore, il significato simbolico del segno.
Negli anni fino al 2000 vi è un graduale ritorno a uno stile figurativo semplice e naturalistico, che approderà al ritratto dal reale — eseguito ad olio su tela con tecnica antica, e in terracotta a tutto tondo.
Più recentemente la sua ricerca si concentra sulla tonalità del colore, sulla sintesi della forma, sull'espressività del materiale usato e della tecnica artistica. Nascono così le attuali figure dignitose e pacate che si stagliano in un'atmosfera senza tempo.

Pettinà's artistic expression manifests itself equally through painting (oil on canvas) and sculpture — wood, various materials, but especially terracotta.
In 1991 he held his first solo exhibition of painting and sculpture, in which a distorted, anguished figurative style highlights the essentiality of drawing and the search for expressiveness. Around the figures there is often a shadow, a dark outline that, like a chain, deprives humanity of freedom.
From 1992 to 1995 a greater need for expressive freedom takes over, manifesting itself through the stylisation of form, the boldness of colour and the symbolic meaning of the sign.
In the years up to 2000 there is a gradual return to a simple, naturalistic figurative style, culminating in portraits from life — executed in oil on canvas using ancient technique, and in full-round terracotta.
More recently his research focuses on colour tonality, the synthesis of form, and the expressiveness of the material and artistic technique used. This gives rise to the current dignified and serene figures that stand out against a timeless atmosphere.

Pettinàs künstlerischer Ausdruck manifestiert sich gleichermaßen in der Malerei (Öl auf Leinwand) und in der Plastik — Holz, verschiedene Materialien, vor allem Terrakotta.
1991 hielt er seine erste Einzelausstellung mit Malerei und Skulptur ab, in der ein verzerrter, leidvoller figurativer Stil die Wesentlichkeit der Zeichnung und die Suche nach Ausdruckskraft hervorhebt. Um die Figuren liegt oft ein Schatten, eine dunkle Kontur, die wie eine Kette den Menschen seiner Freiheit beraubt.

In den Jahren bis 2000 erfolgt eine schrittweise Rückkehr zu einem einfachen, naturalistischen Figurativen, das im Porträt nach dem Leben gipfelt — ausgeführt in Öl auf Leinwand nach alter Technik und in vollrunder Terrakotta.
In jüngster Zeit konzentriert sich seine Forschung auf die Farbtönung, die Synthese der Form und die Ausdruckskraft des verwendeten Materials und der künstlerischen Technik. So entstehen die heutigen würdevollen und ruhigen Figuren, die sich vor einer zeitlosen Atmosphäre abheben.
